The last Pool matches were slated for the day and stakes were high for all eight teams. The bottom half of the Pool was playing for position 3 and 4, while the top half of the Pools were playing to determine who will finish off position 1 and 2.

“The Varsity League moving into the future will feature a relegation and promotion system that helps increase competition inside the league but also continue to improve the skill level of the players.” As stated by Sports Options M.D Mr. Aggrey Chabeda. He continues to encourage many Kenyans to come out and support University sports especially students of the participating institutions.

UOE TROJANS v. TUK MUSTANGS [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image][vc_column_text]A morning game between UOE and TUK saw both sides go on the pitch to fight for position 3 & 4 of Pool B. Both sides had two losses after week two games held at CUEA Sports Complex, but were separated by point’s difference with the UOE Trojans having -26 points while the Mustangs had -61points point difference. The two sides met in an early morning encounter opening week three.

Sirnel Luvutse slotted a penalty to take the Trojans ahead with a nicely calculated kick in the 5th minute. A few minutes later, the Trojans continued their dominance on the game with tries from Barasa Simiyu, Edwin Yatich, Mwange Alex and Clever Mulunda to finish off the game 23-0. Yatich Edwins’ kicking boot was left in Eldoret as he had a 0% success rate in kicking the extras.

JKUAT COUGARS v. TUM MARINES [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image][vc_column_text]The Thika Road side came composed for their game against the travelling Mombasa side Marines. In one of the tightly contested matches of the league, breakout star Elvis Namusasi sent the Marines 3-0 with a penalty after an infringement by the Cougars in the second minute. The Cougars responded 8 minutes later with a try by Elijah Muthama with Emmanuel Abuyo answering the try with a conversion. Elvis Namusasi cut through the Cougars line with a perfect run to ground a try and add a conversion later to send the score to 10-7. Just before the break, the Marines were awarded a penalty which Elvis didn’t miss to end the game at 13-7 at Half Time.

Second half was fun filled Bramwel Kilwoke didn’t waste time in second half as he looked to add points for JKUAT with a try but Emmanuel could not add the conversion (13-12).  Obadia Kibet of TUM replied with a hard running try in the 55th minute to send the Marines in front (18-12). Elvis Namusasi failed to add the extra 2 points. The JKUAT eight Bramwel again found the chalk to help his team win a tightly fought match sending the score to 17 and Eugene Asava with no mistake added the extras to end the game 19-18. JKUAT Cougars secured a third place finish third in Pool A with 5 1win-2losses-one draw (5points)

UON MEAN MACHINE v. CUEA CATHOLIC MONKS[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image][vc_column_text]The fight for top seed between both these teams was at display during the game at the Kenyatta University Rugby grounds. The Machines play was characterized by hard runs and impactful play went up by three points after a penalty by their high flying Trevor Asina. Minutes later, the Catholic Monks were caught off guard and Trevor Asina continued to show his kicking prowess adding an extra 3 points to the board. The Catholic Monks later got a share of kicking advantage to get extra points and Samuel Otieno did not miss this opportunity making the score 6-3. Trevor Asina came back to haunt the Monks with another 3 for the Machines to send the core to 9-3. Minutes later, Samuel Messa crossed the chalk to add 5 points for the Machines and Trevor Asina continuing his 100% kicking record adding the 2 extra points. At Half Time, score at 16-3. Three minutes into second half, Maxwell Omondi powerfully ran into the try area to gift Catholic Monks a try and Geoffrey Okwach added the extras to send the score to 16-10. A kicking range penalty awarded to Mean Machines gave Trevor to add extra points to (19-10). The University of Nairobi team with their power play added points through an Edward Waithaka try and Trevor Asina adding the extra points. University of Nairobi finished top seeded Pool B with 13 points.

KU BLAKBLAD v. EGERTON UNIVERSITY WASPS[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image][vc_column_text]In the last game of the day, Kenyatta University ran to the pitch to play Egerton Wasps from Njoro, Nakuru. Being at home, the Blad attracted a mammoth of a crowd ranking K.U as the highly attended Varsity League game day with the crowd reaching up to 300+ people.

The Wasps started the game with a Drop Goal in the first minutes through a Brian Ndege boot to put Wasps ahead by 3-0. BlakBlad didn’t waste any time opening up for the speed merchant at the wing Archaelius to the try area sending the home crowd into frenzy, but Lionel Ajelity could not add the extras. Lionel Ajelity found a penalty within his range and he carefully sent it in to extend the lead (8-3). Egerton University Wasps were added a penalty and Brian Ndege sent it in to put the scores 8-6. Just before the break, the Wasps defense slacked giving Lionel Ajelity a good distance and pressure-less space where he could easily drop a goal to send the score 11-6 at Half Time.

Lionel Ajelity came back in the second half and continued punishing the Wasps with two penalties in a time range of 3 minutes adding 6 extra points for the home side (17-6). The home side added ten extra points through tries from Stormy Odhiambo and substitute Brian Kadege to finish off the match 27-6.

VARSITY LEAGUE SEMI-FINAL PAIRING

The Varsity League semis set for 20th October will be played in Njoro, Nakuru at Egerton University Wasps home ground.
